The best time to visit South Africa, region by region

5 min read · Facts checked

The short answer

There is no bad time to visit, but the best time depends on where you are going. For safari, the dry winter months (roughly May to September) give the best game viewing. For Cape Town, the warm, dry summer (November to March) is peak season, with February and March often the sweet spot. Whale watching along the southern coast runs from about June to November.

South Africa’s seasons at a glance

South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America. Summer runs from December to February and winter from June to August. The country has two broad weather patterns: the Western Cape gets most of its rain in winter, while Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Kruger area get theirs in summer, usually as short afternoon thunderstorms.

Cape Town and the Winelands

  • November to March: warm, dry and sunny. Peak season, with busy beaches and higher prices over Christmas and New Year.
  • February and March: still warm, with calmer crowds once local school holidays end.
  • May to August: cooler and wetter, quieter and better value. Green landscapes and cosy wine-farm fireplaces.
  • Summer brings the strong south-easter wind, locally called the “Cape Doctor”, so plan mountain and boat trips with the forecast in mind.

Safari: Kruger and the game reserves

  • Dry season (about May to September): thinner bush and animals gathering at water make game easier to see. Days are mild; early mornings and nights are cold.
  • Green season (about November to March): lush scenery, newborn animals and excellent birding, with afternoon storms and more heat.
  • Kruger and the north-east are malaria areas. Malaria-free alternatives such as Pilanesberg and Madikwe suit families and short trips.

Johannesburg and Pretoria

Gauteng is a year-round destination. Winters are dry and sunny with crisp mornings; summers are warm with dramatic afternoon storms. Spring (September to October) brings Pretoria’s famous jacaranda bloom.

Whale watching and the Garden Route

Southern right whales visit the southern coast from about June to November, and Hermanus is famous for land-based whale watching. The Garden Route is pleasant year-round, with the warmest, busiest months over the December holidays.
