Things to do in Cape Town: the places worth your time

6 min read · Facts checked

The short answer

Start with Table Mountain (by cable car or on foot), Robben Island, the drive to Cape Point via Chapman’s Peak, the penguins at Boulders Beach and a day in the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Book Robben Island and the cableway ahead, and keep a flexible day: wind and weather decide what is possible.

Table Mountain

Cape Town’s flat-topped icon is one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Ride the cableway or hike up via one of the established routes, then walk the summit for views over the city, Robben Island and the Atlantic. The cableway closes in high wind, so check its status on the day and go early when the weather is clear.

Robben Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Tours include the ferry crossing from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront and a guided visit, often with a former political prisoner. Book well ahead: tours sell out and sailings are cancelled in rough seas.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

A full-day drive down the peninsula is one of the world’s great coastal routes: Chapman’s Peak Drive, Hout Bay and the dramatic cliffs of Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park. Stop at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town to see its African penguin colony up close.

Kirstenbosch and the city

  • Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, on the slopes of Table Mountain, with its tree-canopy walkway.
  • The colourful streets of the Bo-Kaap, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
  • The V&A Waterfront for dining, shopping and the Zeitz MOCAA art museum.
  • Sunset at Signal Hill or along the Camps Bay promenade.

The Cape Winelands

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl sit within about an hour’s drive of the city, with historic estates, fine dining and mountain scenery. A chauffeur-driven day means everyone in the group can enjoy the tastings.

Further afield

Hermanus for land-based whale watching from about June to November, and the Garden Route for a longer coastal road trip.
