The Gautrain: a visitor’s guide to Gauteng’s rapid rail

4 min read · Facts checked

The short answer

The Gautrain is Gauteng’s rapid rail network: 10 stations linking OR Tambo airport, Sandton, Rosebank, Johannesburg Park Station, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria and Hatfield. The airport line reaches Sandton in about 15 minutes. It is the most reliable way to skip highway traffic between the main business districts; pair it with a chauffeur for the door-to-door part.

The network

  • North–south line: Park (Johannesburg), Rosebank, Sandton, Marlboro, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria, Hatfield.
  • Airport line: OR Tambo International, Rhodesfield, Marlboro, Sandton.
  • Travelling from the airport to Pretoria? Change at Marlboro.

Tips for visitors

  • Check the official site for current timetables, fares and payment options before you travel.
  • Allow time to walk from the airport terminal to the platform.
  • Stations are the start of the journey, not the end: arrange transport from your destination station in advance.

Gautrain plus chauffeur

For many trips, the fastest door-to-door option is the train for the congested middle section and a chauffeur for the last mile. Tell us your train and station, and we will meet you on arrival and help with luggage.
